A bwo soft hackle for picky fish tutorial and video

  This is a fly I have been using for some time on bwo hatches. It works wonders on picky or pressured trout.  Just quarter down at the trout with it, and get be ready for the strike.  It has been my go to fly for me for years during bwo time on some of the Pa limestone streams such as the Saucon. This fly teamed with a bead wing is just deadly. Its almost unfair.

 Its a quick tie and it certainly isnt anything fancy, but like I said, it cleans up.

Materials

Hook- Daiichi 1550 14-18

Thread- Uni 8/0 light olive

Tail- Pheasant tail fibers

Thorax- Tying thread

Rib- X-small copper wire

Thorax- Pheasant tail fibers

Hackle- Grey partridge. 

Start the thread at the eye and run it back to the barb. Touching turns the whole way.

Select about 3-4 pheasant tail fibers, measure them to be about half the length of the shank and tie them in on top of the shank with one wrap.

Tie in the wire on the way up, make nice touching turns tying in the pheasant tail fibers as well.  Stop at the two thirds point

Rib the wire, make nice open turns, widening them as you go, tie the wire off and the pheasant tail fibers back.

Wrap the pheasant tail fibers to form the thorax. Be sure not to crowd the head.

Tie in a grey partridge feather by the tip, strip the fluff off the feather first.

Wrap the hackle, you should one full turn. Secure the stem of the partridge on the way down to the eye.

Fold everybody back and wrap the thread up back to the hackle collar, keep the thread tight and break off the stem. Then whip finish.

You can hit the head with cement if you wish, its not necessary though with a tight whip finish.  The fly is complete. You now have a deadly bwo softy!!!
